Suryanar Koil, is erected by King Kulothunga Chola I in the year 1100 AD.This is a shrine dedicated for the nine planets — Navagrahas. The devotee can worship all the planets as presiding deities.The SUN is the primary deity. Usha devi and Sri Purusha devi(Chaya devi) are the consorts.Sun god holding two lotus blossoms in his hands It is king of kings in the Navagraha planets. It is at a distance of 93,00,000 kilometers from earth. He is the owner of Simha Zodiac. He Circumvent the earth in a year. He is in Ticha(High) power in Mesha Rasi. Lord SUN signifies father. He offers emergy, will power, faithfulness, obedience, strength, might, drawing others. SUN is the son of Kachyapa Muniver. The temple sannadhi is oriented west. The temple is under the authority of Thiruvaduthurai Adhinam. The vechicle of the lord is horse. This horse is named Sabtha Sabtham. It indicates the seven horses of the sun's Chariot.
Surya is the chief, the solar deity, one of the Adityas, and the son of Kashyapa and one of his wives, Aditi, Indra, or Dyaus Pita. Lord Surya or the Sun God has the primary place amongst the navagrahas facing the east. Also known as Ravi, Surya is the Lord of ‘Simha Rashi’ or Leo sign in Zodiac. Surya’s vahana is a chariot driven by seven horses. The seven horses symbolize the seven colors of white light and the seven days of the week. He presides over ‘Raviwar’ or Sunday, his hue is red and gemstone is ruby. The grain linked with the Sun is whole wheat and the number associated to the Surya is 1. The practice of practicing Surya Namaskar is a beneficial practice for a healthy existence.

The temple is located in a small village called as SuryanarKoil and is about 2Km. north of Aduthurai town. Suriyanar Kovil is located at Thirumangalakkudi(near Aduthurai, Kumbakonam). The nearest railway station is Aduthurai which is in between Kumbakonam and Mayiladuthurai railway line.
